Barry Pavel Biography

I began my career in advertising in the early 1990s. You may ask, "What made you enter the field of advertising, Barry?" Well, to be truthful, this was not my first career and years before I had actually told myself I would never become a commercial artist. After serving in the US Army, I studied design in college. I certainly didn't envision myself sitting behind a desk all day desiging newspaper ads though. Little did I know that years later there would be a revolution in the personal computer technology, and then the internet, and I would wind up working as a graphic artist anyway.

After graduating in 1985 with a degree in Theatre (Acting/Directing) from Florida Atlantic University, I stayed on at FAU in their student union center as a sort of a supervisor / stage manager / audio/stage tech. We set up productions for concerts, lectures, dance compaies, theatrical productions and such. I think the last year I was there we did over 250 productions on the auditorium stage. That didn't count the bands in the Rathskeller or other events on campus.

In 1990 I suffered a strained back. Unable to do the heavy set-up work in the theater I realized it was time for a change. Within the next year I found myself hip deep in the world of advertising. A position at the South Florida Newspaper Network led into my first advertising agency position at Gallaspy & Lobel in Fort Lauderdale in 1993. In 1995 I joined Golnick Advertising. In the summer of 1996 I went to Atlanta with the intent of relocating there but found myself back in Florida where, in 1997, I joined the art department at Zimmerman Partners Advertising. When Zimmerman cut it's staff due to loosing their big Mitsubishi account, I quickly found a position at McGee & Star Advertising. I returned to Zimmerman in 2000 after M&S lost their Toyota account. In 2002 I moved into the world of web design at the North Broward Hospital District. Narrowly dodging a department cutback a year later, I returned to Zimmerman for what would be my final time. In 2005 I joined the staff at Omni Advertising in Boca Raton, Florida, who I continue to work as a contractor from my home in North Carolina.
